Building Permits
The Township of Chapple requires building permits on the construction of new buildings.
All building activity within the Township is governed by the Ontario Building Code Regulations.
Municipal building permits are required for most construction activity. Contact the municipal office for any questions to this regard.
Permit fees are based on construction costs or on a square foot basis.
Fees are approximately 0.7% of construction costs.
Buildings are also regulated by Chapple’s Official Plan and Comprehensive Zoning By-law.

Official Plan
The Township of Chapple is located within the Rainy River District in Northwestern Ontario and is comprised of nine (9) geographic townships including:
- Barwick
- Dobie
- Mather
- Tait
- Long Sault
- Roseberry
- Shenston
- Potts
- Richardson
In 1995, the Township of Chapple undertook the process of developing an Official Plan and a Comprehensive Zoning By-law. As a result of many hours of work by the Township Council, the Planning Advisory Committee and the staff, an Official Plan received the Minister of Municipal Affairs & Housing approval late in 1997. This document contains land use policies in the following designations:
- Rural
- Agricultural
- Residential
- Commercial
- Industrial
- Recreational - Open Space
- Conservation - Environmental Protection
The goals of this Official Plan are to:
- protect and maintain the quality of life in the Township while at the same time provide opportunities for growth and appropriate development;
- establish policies which manage and direct physical change and the effects on the social, economic and natural environment, of the Township, over the next 15 years;
- secure the health, safety, convenience and welfare of the residents of Chapple Township;
- ensure the Township’s resources are rationally used and both the natural and cultural heritage features are protected;
- permit the delegation of approval to the Township Council with respect to decisions regarding land use planning matters for such matters as consents and subdivision approval;
- quality the Township for various programs funded by senior levels of government.
- provide policies which will encourage the expansion and diversification of the local economic base;
- provide policies that guide development that is environmentally compatible and supports sustainable development;
- inform the residents of the Township of Chapple of the policies that affect the development of land;
- provide a guiding framework for implementing by-laws and for decisions of local boards, commissions, committees and other authorities;
- provide Official Plan coverage throughout the Township; and
- provide policies that have regard to the Provincial Policy Statement based on local conditions and circumstances. Comprehensive Zoning By-law
