Attractions

Emo Agriculture Research Station - began as Crop Check North in Pinewood, in 1985 but we quickly grew out of our room so we moved to Chapple in 1990. We are a part of the University of Guelph and we are lucky to have a Research Station in the North. Climates are very different than that of Southern Ontario and even just Thunder Bay. Our main focus is forages as this part of North Western Ontario is grass country. We also do research on cereals, oilseeds and crops of diversification. A big part of our program lately has been our Hybrid Poplar studies.

The Research Station is Open Monday to Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4: 30 p.m.- from April 1 to December 1.

We welcome your visit anytime, but we do have a pasture night in early June and late September and an Annual Open House the last week of July.

Located in the formers Gills Trading Post, our museum will no longer be Barwicks’ hidden treasure. Overseen by Reeve William Clink and lovely wife Emily, our museum is indeed a treasure to behold. From present day to days gone by there is something here for everyone. From the Hudson Bay display to the war memorabilia, pioneer rooms, old municipal records, pictures of original homesteaders, old logging equipment, information on the old schools, churches and businesses in our area. Wildlife Sanctuary.

Our wildlife sanctuary is open this year (2006). The public is welcome. It is supervised viewing only.

Within our sanctuary we look after and feed approximately 40 bears per day, many with their cubs.

We have a tame doe (1 year old) that we have helped to survive. She follows the family like a puppy when she is in the area. She has free rein of the area and is not confined.

There are raccoon families that we have raised, a family of timber wolves in the area and during the winter months we feed and take care of approx. 30 deer per say.

We belong to the International Wildlife Rehabilitation Council # 6582.

There is bird watching also.

We are members of the North American Bird Watching Society.

We are looking forward to making this a year round facility with the snowmobile races being held. We will be providing a smaller track for the younger enthusiasts to be able to provide year round entertainment for the whole family.
